Ex- FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's legal representative entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the case thrown out for several reasons including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was charged shortly after the former president pushed his top legal official to take action against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald informed the court they aimed to submit various legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a court case, stating the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to take over the case.

The former director's proceedings was originally handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his investigation into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, his wife and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he grasped the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first term as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege the former director gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the legislative body by saying he had not permitted an individual at the agency to leak to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, hinder and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a court case."

The accusations against James Comey came after the former president shared on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and other people.
