From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in power within the city.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.
The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled
Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to begin their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.
This warrior group features Teor (portrayed by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).
The Reason for Division
With an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.
Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.
Characteristics of the Warrior Group
According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.
At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might seem unsuited, but the developments of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
First, the team understands precisely where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.
An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the story’s plot—used the enemy for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.
The traitor then settled his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond the urban center, with Cyd close behind.
Individual Reasons
Secondly, each member has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:
- The rogue, as the companion and closest confidant, desires retribution.
- The adventurer is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
- The strong character and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
- But, their status as important members in House Halovar could help the team enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.
Fugitives
Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city too risky:
- The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and Wicander defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
- Teor is marked for death by the clan.
This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in quest for the traitor.
