UK Extends Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with Eleven Destinations

Toxic substance warning sign

British government has placed eleven new countries to its travel alert roster about the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from tainted beverages.

This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Just last month, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, following a number of serious cases like the tragic demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical commonly utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.

However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Official Advice for Travelers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should know the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"While drinking spirits abroad, choose trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer advised.

"If something appears suspicious, for example a headache that's way worse than normal or sight issues – contact a doctor fast."

The complete list of nations listed as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
