Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings from the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
